An account of a voyage in an RNYC yacht round the Western Islands, by an unidentified author, illustrated with photographs, water-colour drawings, and pen sketches of the party, crew and scenery.

The party includes Jessie, Rae, Fred and cousin A. Rintoul and others.

The crew were Captain Peter MacNichol, Jack MacMillan, John MacAllister, Ronald MacDonald, Malcolm Wilkie and Dugald MacGillivray.

The sketches are chiefly undated but where dated range in year from 1863 to 1876. Although most of the sketches are of St Abb's Head, the Bass Rock, Tantallon, Holy Island, etc., there are some views of Perthshire, Jedburgh, Roxburgh, and other places inland. The collection also contains an unfinished drawing of Fernilee, subscribed 'The house were (sic) the "Flowers of the Forest" was written'.

Comprising a 39-page memoir of Alexander Francis Elphinstone's grandfather, John Elphinstone, arranged by date, with geneaological notes. The volume also includes 9 pen and ink sketches and watercolours of buildings and scenery, probably depicting locations from Alexander Francis Elphinstone's early years in the Baltic.

Scope and Contents

In an introductory note (volume 1, folio iv.), Martyn states that many of the arms were unpublished, and taken from seals, drawings, paintings and manuscript blazons; also from a manuscript collection of heraldry `purchased at Mr Cummyngs sale by a Mr Rose`. This probably refers to James Cummyng, herald painter and Lyon Clerk Depute (died 1793). Martyn sometimes gives the source for a particular coat of arms, and occasionally criticises the heraldry.

Correspondence and papers of Edward Ellice (died 1863) of Invergarry and of his son Edward Ellice (died 1880) of Invergarry, and of other members of the Ellice family descended from Alexander Ellice, 'America and West Indies Merchant', London, who died at Bath in 1805.

Scope and Contents

Jessy Harden's journal, essentially a series of family newsletters, was sent in instalments to her sister, Agnes Ranken, in India. Many of her husband's drawings were used to illustrate it. Journals and sketches alike survived because Agnes Ranken preserved them and eventually brought them back to Great Britain.
